A new year typically means people make new year's resolutions. My new year's resolution is to bring awareness about VELUX skylights to more people!
Why are they are important? Not only do they look great, they also bring in more natural sunlight into your home, they allow fresh air to flow inside the home, which means, you could actually be making your home healthier!
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on average people spend 90% of their time indoors, while homes are built tighter for energy efficiency, they are also great at trapping harmful pollutants inside.
The result is that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air! YIKES!
Consumer awareness of this problem is growing, according to a survey by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University3: 42% of households ages 25–34 have healthy housing concerns, while 37% of families with children share the same sentiments. Nearly 75% of households surveyed listed indoor air quality as the factor that best describes their concern about the impact of their home on the household’s health.
With the mounting data regarding the negative health effects of poor indoor air quality, particularly for those who suffer from asthma and allergies, natural house ventilation is becoming more popular as a component of a healthy home design strategy.
Also, the fact that ordinary HVAC systems recycle indoor air rather than replacing it with fresh air surprises many people. A ventilation skylight addition that opens intermittently during the day might enhance indoor air quality.
In 2023, consider adding skylights to your bathroom or kitchen area, as these rooms are especially vulnerable.
